Xenoblade Chronicles 2's relationship ending

I have heard online that there was a harem relationship ending in XC2 and that in the new game, that it is the canon relationship ending to the 2nd game..... And apparently, some fans dislike/hate that. I have never played a Xenoblade game or any game in the Xeno metaseries, but to me, it seems like an odd thing to complain about.

Because, 1) I thought each XC game was disconnected from eachother and 2) it sounds like people getting mad that a poly relationship is canon.

Like the only actual reason, I can see for people for disliking this being the canon relationship ending is that it is playing it too safe.
